Sam Mitchell confides in Alfie Moon in EastEnders tonight (Tuesday, January 6), after receiving a date for her lumpectomy treatment for breast cancer. This comes after doctors confirmed that she has breast cancer, just like her mum before her, Peggy Mitchell.

Alfie, too, has his own history with cancer – having previously been diagnosed with both a brain tumour and prostate cancer.

But what happened with his brain tumour diagnosis? And is he still fighting cancer?

Here’s everything Alfie has been through so far.

Alfie’s brain tumour diagnosis

In 2015, doctors diagnosed Alfie with a brain tumour after he experienced a series of headaches. He attended an appointment at the hospital, where doctors informed him that the benign tumour had stopped growing – but may require an operation to prevent further symptoms.

Soon after, Alfie and Kat left Walford in search of her long-lost son, Luke Slater. They subsequently arrived at the Irish town of Redwater, where Alfie began experiencing hallucinations due to the mass on his brain.

As the spin-off series ended, Alfie underwent an operation to remove the tumour… losing his pulse and apparently dying on the operating table as the credits rolled.

Evidently, Alfie survived. However, his brain tumour was largely brushed under the rug, along with the existence of Kat’s missing son.

Alfie Moon’s Prostate cancer diagnosis in EastEnders

Years later, and now back in Walford, doctors diagnosed Alfie with prostate cancer. During this time, he formed a bond with Kat’s new fiancée, Phil Mitchell (!), who supported him in his secret journey.

Alfie ultimately missed out on Kat’s wedding due it being on the same date as the operation to have his prostate removed. However, Alfie was distraught to learn that the operation had not been a success, and a number of cancerous cells remained.

Alfie managed to reconcile his relationship with Kat after her marriage to Phil fell apart, once again tying the knot last year. During this time, Alfie has continued to navigate treatment of his cancer, as well as some of the side-effects – which included struggling with his performance in the bedroom.
