5 things Stacey should do with her money rather than buy The Vic

Is Stacey wasting her windfall?

Stacey Slater came into a lot of money in EastEnders this week, learning that she was the beneficiary of a £100,000 life insurance payout following Martin Fowler’s death. As his ex-wife, she’d been left the lot… striking it rich only a day after lying to Ian Beale that she’d won that exact same amount on a scratch card. Talk about manifesting.

After a little deliberation, Stacey decided to donate the money to Kat, in her bid for The Queen Vic. A surprising decision to essentially give it all away, given how hard-up Stacey has historically been. Why, only a couple of years ago, she’d been forced to resort to opening an OnlyFans-type website to make ends meet.

One would think she’d spend the money on her house or kids instead, rather than immediately giving it to Kat.

Here’s what Stacey should be spending the money on instead.

What should Stacey do with her money on EastEnders?

1. Get her life in order

Prior to her visit from the insurance agent, Stacey had been complaining about how difficult it was to keep up with the bills. Assuming that he’d been a bailiff, she shared how the purse strings were a lot tighter, now Harvey’s no longer chipping in. And Martin had always helped out more than he needed to, as well.

You would think, then, that Stacey might use the cash to catch up on all those ‘brown letters’ she’s been shoving in drawers. Maybe buy the kids some new clothes? Fill the fridge full of food? Give the house a bit of a revamp?

Instead, it goes straight to Kat, so she can bid on the local pub. Hey, at least the drinks will be free.

2. Look after Martin’s children

If there’s one phrase we can use to describe Martin Fowler, it’s ‘greengrocer.’ If we absolutely had to use another, then it’d be ‘family man.’

It’s hard to know what Martin had envisioned when he named Stacey as the sole recipient of his life insurance policy. But buying a pub?  Probably not that.  While Stacey’s bound to always provide for Lily, Hope and Arthur, where does that leave Bex and Roman?

While investing the money is wise (more on that one later), he’d probably have liked at least a little of it to go to his children.

3. Invest it properly

There’s no denying that The Queen Vic is an investment. It’s not as though Stacey is just giving the money to Kat and walking off – she’ll likely remain a silent partner in the pub long after actress Lacey Turner has left the soap.

But is it a sensible investment? That kind of money might have been better put into a savings account for their children, where it can soak up interest and turn a healthy profit by the time Roman, Arthur and Charli turn 18.

Or why not her own business? A fleet of trucks for Stacey’s Baps, perhaps.

4. Bail out Zoe

Some of Stacey’s motivation in buying The Vic for Kat is likely guilt about lying to her about Zoe. As established during her return, Zoe’s in trouble – likely of the financial kind.

At the very least, she racked up quite the credit card bill while they were staying together in Stacey’s rented apartment. A chunk of Martin’s money would perhaps be better put towards paying off those credit cards (including the one she used to rent a place in central London!) and helping Zoe to return.

5. Not buy the place where Martin literally died

Whatever Martin would might have wanted Stacey to do with the life insurance money, her buying the place where he quite literally died probably isn’t it.

And it’s hard to see why she’d want to either – only last week, she was struggling with the prospect of re-opening the fruit and veg stall.

It’s not just Martin who died there either. It’s also the site where she watched Linda stab Keanu Taylor to death, and Denise bash Nish over the head, leading to absolutely everything that’s happened over the past year and a half. Before that? Other dead ex-husband Bradley also died there, falling off the roof.

Far from spending all her money on it, Stacey should be having it demolished, never to torment her or her family ever again. But, y’know, free drinks.
