The Machine dispenses the social security number of Vanessa Watkins - a prosecuting attorney who has just reported that her husband has gone missing from their yacht. The detective in charge of the investigation has a grudge against the lawyer and arrests her on suspicion of murder, but in a series of daring and enterprising escapes she evades police custody and becomes the focus of a city-wide manhunt.
