Unwin begins his political career with a vow to crack down on crime - particularly smuggling. Ross needs to pay his debts soon, so makes plans to expand his business and seeks funding for a new tunneling scheme. Francis offers to invest in the scheme, but Ross is suspicious when he discovers the money came from George. Jud is attacked for recanting his testimony at the trial, and Demelza conceals her pregnancy, convinced her husband does not want a child - but his flirtatious nature with Elizabeth spurs her to a furious revelation
