CID's latest recruit DC Spears chooses a bad day to discuss security measures with a building society manager - no sooner has she arrived than armed robbers burst into the premises. The plucky officer manages to avoid detection long enough to contact Sun Hill, but the situation takes a turn for the worse when PC Smith arrives on the scene and is promptly taken hostage, creating a highly volatile situation which gives Conway an opportunity to hone his negotiating skills.
