Alphy remains undecided on his birthday about whether to open a letter his mother wrote when she left him as a baby or not. He plans to spend the evening alone, but Geordie has organised a surprise treat in the form of a gig. Local up-and-comers the Velvet Jacks are playing, but the evening is overshadowed when the band's frontman is found dead as Geordie and Alphy soon uncover in-fighting amongst the group's inner circle alongside a love triangle involving a female fan.
