Civilising the Sea

Season 1 Episode 3 of 3

Maritime historian Dr Sam Willis travels to Africa to trace the origins and development of the women and children first protocol when abandoning ship - a code of conduct that came about in the Victorian era. He also reveals how the period oversaw trials of several other proposed solutions to high mortality rates at sea, such as life jackets, lifeboats, and rockets that could fire rescue lines on board stricken vessels
