In May 1957, New York mob boss Frank Costello, head of the Luciano crime clan, is shot outside his penthouse elevator. The gunman, Vincent Gigante, acts under orders from Frank's former friend-turned-rival, Vito Genovese, who defies Mafia protocol by ordering the hit without approval from other families.
