Wonderland: Gothic
Gothic Forms
Season 1 Episode 2 of 4
A look at the genre's influence as it spread from literature to film, as German expressionist directors took inspiration from stories like Bram Stoker's Dracula to create films such as FW Murnau's Nosferatu. Hollywood would follow suit, with James Whale bringing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to the big screen with Boris Karloff as the monster in a portrayal that remains burned into the social conscience. Alfred Hitchcock would then take Daphne du Maurier's classic Gothic novel Rebecca and take people back to Manderley again
Wonderland: Gothic airs on Sky Arts at 9:00 PM, Wednesday 20 August. (Subtitles, audio description.)
