The most recent of those games took place in Colorado last October, and saw the Americans dominate possession and eventually triumph 2-1, bringing an end to a 12-match unbeaten run for the Socceroos, in what was also a first defeat for Tony Popovic as coach. Both teams reached the knockout stage in Qatar four years ago but failed to make it further than the last-16, with the USA eliminated by the Netherlands following a 3-1 defeat, and Australia suffering a narrow 2-1 loss to eventual champions Argentina.
