Ian looks at the new wave of horror films that was kickstarted in the late-1960s, with the genre finding a new lease of life as directors broke the rules and added style to its tropes. Starting with George Romero's 1968 zombie-horror progenitor Night of the Living Dead and William Friedkin's epochal 1973 possession story The Exorcist, he revisits the rise of the slasher film with John Carpenter's 1978 classic Halloween, and Sam Raimi splicing gruesome body horror with slapstick comedy in 1981's The Evil Dead and its 1987 sequel Evil Dead II
