Luke Humphries was champion last year, prevailing 5-2 against Danny Noppert in the last four, before edging past Jonny Clayton 6-5 in the showpiece match. It was the seventh major title 'Cool Hand' had won and he went on to add the Premier League to his collection later in the year, but he was expected to face stiff competition in this year's competition from the likes of Luke Littler and Gian van Veen and Michael van Gerwen.
