The murders of 16 people in Hungerford, west Berkshire, in August 1987, when unemployed labourer and antiques dealer Michael Ryan went on a shooting spree. The community went into virtual lockdown as emergency teams and journalists flocked to the town. The gunman eventually barricaded himself in a classroom and committed suicide later the same day
