Beethoven's Fidelio: The Royal Opera

Antonio Pappano conducts a production of Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, from the Royal Opera House, a story of risk and triumph against the backdrop of revolution. David Butt Philip plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore - disguised as 'Fidelio' - who daringly sets out to save him from certain death. Tobias Kratzer's staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolutionary 'Terror' and our own time to illuminate Fidelio's inspiring message of shared humanity

Beethoven's Fidelio: The Royal Opera airs on BBC Four HD at 1:15 AM, Monday 30 June. (Subtitles.)
