A woman leaves her estate to her son Alexander, who disappeared in Italy during World War Two on condition he claims the inheritance by 2010. When a mysterious stranger turns up at the funeral to claim the inheritance, he is called an imposter by the rest of the family. The quest for the truth finds Dalziel and Pascoe uncovering dark family secrets, including murder, betrayal, mad dogs, gay bars, young love and a revealing birthmark.
