Animals for whom the odds of successfully mating are unusually high, including fan-tailed anglerfish in the deep oceans, who will rarely happen upon a mate, and when they do, their bodies literally fuse into one. In southern Russia, toad-headed agamas need to build burrows for their eggs in a landscape of constantly changing sand dunes, while in North America, periodical cicadas emerge from the ground in immense swarms to overwhelm predators and ensure the next generation of ground-dwellers
