The Improbable Mr Attlee
David Reynolds presents a profile of Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee who came to power in the post-war period. Taking charge of a country bankrupted by World War Two, the defiantly socialist Attlee embarked on a series of sweeping changes, establishing the NHS and nationalising major industries. However, his economic policies were unable to bring about an end to rationing, and Britain continued to be plagued by financial crises
