Scarsden decides to stay on in Riversend to dig deeper into the mystery of Byron Swift, a well-liked priest who suddenly murdered five of his parishioners. He discovers that Mandy Bond is the estranged daughter of Harley Reagan, but when he visits Reagan on his out-of-the-way estate, he comes across two skeletal remains.
