Spain were the pre-tournament favourites to top Group H, but they suffered an early setback when they were held to a goalless draw by a Cape Verde side they were expected to comfortably defeat. However, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia also drew in the other match in the opening round of fixtures in the group, leaving all to play for. In contrast, the opening two matches in Group J went as expected, with holders Argentina prevailing 3-0 against Algeria thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick, and Austria claiming their first World Cup finals victory since 1990 with a 3-1 win over Jordan
