In Beirut, Randall holds Professor Dawson while awaiting his paymasters' instructions. Jean and Harry arrive in hot pursuit, each of them reeling from the messy end of personal relationships. Meanwhile, suspicious of Dalby, ultra-hawkish US General Cathcart asks CIA contact Maddox to begin a surveillance operation. His interest is rewarded when they find Dalby on a secret rendezvous in Beirut with Stok, a Russian Colonel. Stok has an offer - a dissident scientist to be exchanged for access to nuclear secrets. Dalby's initial dismissal falters as Stok reveals the dissident's identity
