Being the Brontës

Martha Kearney is joined by author Helen Oyeyemi and journalist Lucy Mangan to immerse themselves in the lives of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë to discover the inspiration behind their classic novels Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey. Travelling to the Haworth Parsonage in West Yorkshire, the trio discover how just two years before their most famous novels were published in 1847, the sisters' prospects were bleak. Charlotte was in love with a married man, their clergyman father Patrick was going blind, and their brother, Branwell, was battling alcoholism. However, by 1848, Charlotte, Emily and Anne were literary sensations, and Martha, Helen and Lucy immerse themselves in the personal lives of the sisters to find out how this happened

Being the Brontës airs on BBC Four HD at 9:00 PM, Wednesday 26 November. (Subtitles, audio description.)
