Is Mise Loretta

Season 17 Episode 2 of 3

Following a year in the life of student and Gaelic learner Loretta Crinall, as she leaves her home in Glasgow and makes her way to the largest city in South America, Sao Paulo, as part of her languages degree. Having recently left her career as a drag performer, Loretta is now embarking on a journey to an unknown country with all the challenges that come with it. As a minority language scholar and activist, this trip gives her the opportunity to conduct in-depth research on the region’s indigenous people. On the Jaragua Mountain, on the outskirts of Sao Paulo, she meets the Guarani people who have lived there for centuries. In a conversation with Anthony Kara’i Poty, Loretta hears how the Guarani have fought to defend their way of life against violence and ignorance. This journey also gives Loretta the opportunity to look back on her life growing up as a black, trans woman, and the impact that has had on her, both personally and politically
