American adventure following the firefighters, rescue squads and paramedics of Firehouse 51, a team that charges head-first into situations that others flee from - but whose members do not always see eye to eye. As the story begins, the crew has been splintered by the death of a colleague, with guilt and blame leading to rivalry between two of the squads. Unknown to the others, Lt Matthew Casey's relationship has fallen apart, while Lt Kelly Severide has turned to drugs to numb his grief. Meanwhile, change is afoot as station chief Boden faces the boot, while a rookie arrives fresh out of the academy - but there's no time for first-day nerves as the team enters a blazing multi-storey building that gives way beneath their boots, trapping two of the crew.
