Clare Balding presents further coverage of day one of the Grand Slam tournament from the All England Club, featuring men's and ladies' first-round matches. Americans Coco Gauff and Caroline Dolehide were the final players to take to Centre Court on day one last year and the former comfortably prevailed 6-1, 6-2. Having previously claimed the 2023 US Open title, Gauff won the 2025 French Open earlier this month, so will expect to be a major contender here, even though she has never previously progressed beyond the fourth round of this event. A number of seeded players in both the men's and women's singles competitions suffered the ignominy of defeat on the opening day of the Grand Slam, with men's 18th seed Sebastián Báez losing to Brandon Nakashima in straight sets, and women's number eight seed Zheng Qinwen losing to qualifier Lulu Sun despite winning the first set
