Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a man who had been tried and acquitted of murdering his first wife 10 years before and went on to present a TV programme re-examining cases in which people had been wrongly accused by the police. They discover two friends were meant to have gone swimming with the victim at the time of his death, but had been tricked into staying away, and find themselves examining the past of ADA Mulrooney, whose career had been hampered by his involvement in the previous case
