Making Sound

Season 1 Episode 1 of 2

Helen Czerski investigates the science behind familiar sounds as well as those humans cannot hear. At the Palace of Westminster, she teams up with scientists to carry out measurements using state-of-the-art lasers to reveal how Big Ben vibrates to create pressure waves in the air at particular frequencies. She also explores the science of the voice, inviting soprano Lesley Garrett to sing I Dreamed A Dream inside an MRI scanner to reveal how her vocal tract acts as a resonator, amplifying and shaping the sound from her larynx

Sound Waves: The Symphony of Physics airs on BBC Four HD at 1:00 AM, Monday 2 February. (Subtitles, audio description.)
