On this occasion in Lusail a record number of cautions were given by the referee as he brandished 18 yellow cards in a highly charged affair. Lionel Messi engaged in a touchline confrontation with opposing manager Louis van Gaal, and even in a post-match incident with Wout Weghorst, who scored both goals for the Netherlands as the match ended 2-2 after extra-time, cancelling out the earlier goals of Nahuel Molina and Messi, the latter of whom scored from the penalty spot.
