Balian, a French blacksmith in exile from his homeland, joins a crusade to Jerusalem, where he becomes a knight and pledges to defend the city and its people. Under the rule of the progressive King Baldwin, a fragile peace between Christians and Muslims has been established in the Holy City. However, the king is crippled by leprosy, and his days are numbered.
