The wildlife cameraman sets out on an adventure with his wife Marguerite Smits Van Oyen and daughter Savannah to experience life on the Shetland Islands for a year. Arriving in the summer of 2008, Simon searches for an orca whale, sets up a hide to observe Arctic terns and teaches his daughter how to spot gannets. As winter arrives, the weather begins to cause problems when they are marooned by high winds and tides
