And fans watching at home were totally divided over what they had seen. “Bravo Emmerdale for daring to show what does happen in real life,” said one. “To the complainers, nothing was shown, your imagination did the rest.” Another added: “The final scene of Emmerdale is a hard watch… kudos to Caroline [Harker], not an easy thing to act… and kudos to Emma [Atkins], who broke my heart with a facial expression alone… whilst I hate that they’ve put Charity through this again, there’s no-one more talented than EA to portray it.” “Omg that was horrific to watch. I didn’t think it would be so graphic but it is such an important topic to cover. You very rarely see female-on-female SA covered on tv. Emma and Caroline are doing an amazing job even though it’s horrific to watch!” A fourth said: “Tonight’s Emmerdale is an extremely difficult watch but it was handled absolutely perfectly. Amazing performances from Emma Atkins and Caroline Harker and the directing of the end scene by Yvonne Wells and Haley Muraleedharan was outstanding. Please take care when watching.” Todd left Charity alone (Credit: ITV) Others thought the Charity assault scene in Emmerdale was too much But while there were those who thought it was important, others felt it all too much. “We didn’t need to see a [sexual assault] in prime time,” commented one. A second agreed: “Ok Emmerdale has gone too far.” A third added: “GET THAT SICK WITCH OUT OF Emmerdale OMG! In what universe is it okay to SHOW something like that???” Emmerdale boss and Emma Atkins confirm assault storyline With news of the Charity and Dr Todd assault plot being confirmed, Emmerdale boss Sophie Roper and Charity actress Emma Atkins have spoken out. Emmerdale boss on the upcoming plot Sophie Roper says: "Charity's storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence. "Though this heinous act is fundamentally about power, we'll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman." She added: "With little conversation surrounding female-on-female assault, we'll explore the overwhelming feelings of isolation many survivors experience. [We] will examine the disparity between the legal term sexual assault and the fact that many women in Charity’s position feel this minimises what's happened to them, because they feel like they've been raped. "Though difficult viewing at times, Charity's resilience will inspire hope as she confronts what has happened to her." Emmerdale star Emma Atkins breaks silence Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, has also revealed how hard this has been to film. "This has been one of the most demanding and significant storylines I've had to navigate as Charity," she says. "We know her as a tough, resilient character. But this trauma will expose a deep, raw vulnerability. That has been heartbreaking at times to play." The actress continued: "I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out. Or helps others understand the quiet devastation of trauma." Read more: Who’s leaving Emmerdale?
