Emmerdale review: We've lost all sympathy for Marlon and Rhona, Cain's back, and Kim's in trouble

How many more times can we beg Marlon and Rhona to tell Cain?!
Kerry Barrett

Our Emmerdale review this week is full of frustration, because OMG how annoying have Marlon and Rhona been?

We don’t want to be rude about the frantic parents at a time when they are under enormous stress. BUT, after this week’s antics we are finding it very hard to feel any sympathy for them whatsoever. They have made bad decision after bad decision when it comes to Ray and Celia, and it’s really beginning to get on our wick.

Here’s what made us tear our hair out about everything they did this week. Plus a few other stories that caught our attention in this week’s Emmerdale review.

Trying to escape

The escape plan was good we suppose. Get away from the village, wait for things to calm down… Except frustrating Marlon decided to tell April everything while they were sitting in the car park, delaying their departure.

We felt every Emmerdale viewer was shouting “JUST DRIVE!”. But instead they had a little chat, and obviously Ray was lurking, because everywhere Marlon goes, Ray is lurking. And it all fell apart.

Tell Cain!

Rhona did pull one moment of brilliance out of the bag this week. A nation rejoiced as she suggested they tell Cain everything. “Not everyone has a Cain in their lives,” she told Marlon. “But we do.”

Except then they decided not to tell Cain after all. Groan. Though in his attempt to sell his car quickly and secretly, Marlon asked Cain to buy it. And now he’s suspicious. We hope.

Plus Rhona’s desperate plea to Moira to pay her bill seemed to raise Mrs Dingle’s suspicions, too. Fingers crossed she and Cain will have a chat and realise something’s up.

Marlon isn’t thinking about anyone else

Speaking of Cain, it’s very annoying how Marlon and Rhona aren’t so much as warning other people off Ray and Celia.

Moira’s farm has been on the brink of bankruptcy for yonks. Marlon and Rhona know how much she’s struggling, and they know she’s in business with Celia. A bit of a heads up to be wary might be nice.

Same with Laurel, who’s getting more loved up with Ray by the day. But nope. They’re just going along with it all, as if two of their friends aren’t in danger.

Tell everyone!

We’re also questioning why neither Marlon nor Rhona shouts about their situation. Rhona even threatened to do so in the pub. But then she didn’t. WHY? What exactly could Celia or Ray do in that situation? Marlon and Rhona are proper Emmerdale royalty. There’s no way their friends in the village wouldn’t have their backs.

Similarly, what would have happened if Marlon had told Paddy in the hospital when Ray – obviously – showed up?

Why are they even pretending to be nice to the pair? It’s so weird.

Paying April’s debt

After scrabbling round to find £20,000 Marlon and Rhona handed over the wonga to Ray. And quelle surprise! It turns out the debt wasn’t paid after all. Instead he wants another £2000 every week.

Which is actually quite a silly amount to ask for – no one has that amount of money. It sounded like the sort of random amount a kid asks for when you’re playing shops with them.

Anyway, we were not shocked that evil Ray turned out not to be trustworthy. Who’d have thought, eh?

But we were disappointed that Rhona’s shifty behaviour wasn’t because the brown paper bag she’d handed over was really full of cut-up bits of paper, like we’d hoped. We thought perhaps she was testing him to see if he’d agree to cancel the debt and then she’d reveal that they hadn’t paid him after all. But that was not what happened.

Nope, her slight awkwardness was because she’d made another bad decision and got a pay day loan. Which just added to their complete financial ruin. Do you see how we’re struggling to feel sorry for them?!

Kim lays close to death in Emmerdale

Kim’s shooting

The other big story of the week was Kim being shot and left for dead by the braying posh lads who Sam ran an illegal shoot for.

Poor Kim’s in a bad way having been left bleeding and shivering on the ground overnight and the doctors are worried she could lose her leg.

Which is totally Sam and Lydia’s fault. If Sam somehow manages to keep his job at Home Farm after all this, we’ll really start to doubt Kim’s Soap Bitch credentials.

While all that was going on Jason Donovan entertained the ‘crowds’ in the Woolpack. Our favourite thing about the slightly cringe scenes was Bob doing a sarky impression of Jason the next day.

Wedding bells for Jacob and Sarah

Meanwhile, teen parents-to-be (sort of) Jason and Sarah were making wedding plans, after booking the register office for Christmas Eve. Sarah commented that Jacob’s late mum Leyla would love to be arranging the wedding for them. And once again we were reminded of our conviction that Leyla would be horrified by this whole thing!

Ebenezer Dingle

There was a little spark of interest between Vinny and Lewis this week, which Kammy picked up on immediately and put a stop to in a slightly odd way. But it’s quite cute actually. They fit together well and it was sweet when they were introducing each other to their interests and favourite Christmas books and films.

But we have to wonder if Vinny is the only person in possibly the whole world who didn’t know the story of A Christmas Carol. Surely he’d seen the Muppet version if nothing else?!
