The first batch of changes hit last week, with no episode on Friday (June 5). The soap aired an extra episode on Sunday June 7 to make up for it. Emmerdale was once again taken off air on Tuesday June 9, and on Wednesday June 10 Emmerdale aired at 7pm instead of 8pm. article continues below Read all the latest spoilers Then tonight (Thursday June 11), the soaps are once again off air for the Men’s World Cup Opening Ceremony. This is then followed by the opening game of the tournament which sees Mexico take on South Africa with an 8pm kick-off. We will get a catch up episode for that though as the soaps return to their hour-long formats. Emmerdale will air at 8pm, with Corrie at 9pm on Friday June 12. We feel baffled too, Laurel (Credit: ITV) Fans make demands Emmerdale fans are not happy about all the changes. Many have inisted the football should be aired on ITV2 or ITV3 instead, but ITV are contracted to show the sport on their main channel. The World Cup has to be free to air, so can’t go on a paid-for sport’s channel. Plus, with the amount of advertising revenue on offer, ITV would be unlikely to make that change even if they could.Don't miss a single story! However, now viewers are demanding another option. One fan pointed out on social media: “Last World Cup ITV had a proven plan to upload a full week of Emmerdale on the Monday to ITVX to reduce the impact of the event for all viewers.” They then queried why ITV hasn’t implemented the same plan this time. Many fans agreed with the comment. If Emmerdale was uploaded to the streaming service at the start of each week, it would mean die-hard fans wouldn’t miss out, but those wanting to watch it in real time still had the choice to wait until it was screened on ITV. Win, win, right? Frustration overload! (Credit: ITV) Shorter Emmerdale episodes in the schedule All this disruption comes after ITV changed the soap schedules this year. In October 2024, they began streaming the daily episodes of the soaps from 7am. Despite some concerns that it meant the soap was in trouble, coupled with lots of cast exits, it has been revealed that actually it was a great move by ITV as stats revealed viewing was way up. The soap then announced a new schedule. The soap ‘power hour’ started in January 2026 sees Emmerdale continue to air five nights a week. New episodes also drop on ITVX every morning at 7am as usual. However, the soap has moved to a new time slot of 8pm. The Thursday double bill was also cut to half an hour to make way for additional episodes of Coronation Street. This ensures faster-paced, digestible episodes – a 30-minute format which has already proven popular with viewers. However it also seems that the changes don’t stop the disruption caused by sports.
