Young Jolyon is cited as Irene's lover in his cousin's divorce petition, but the couple find true happiness at last with the birth of their son. Soames, however, almost loses his new wife Annette in childbirth, having told the doctor to save the baby rather than the mother. Although at first he is appalled to learn he has a daughter, rather than the longed-for son he anticipated, he eventually realises he finally has someone to give him unconditional love.
