Disaster at Sea: The Piper Alpha Story
Dark Cloud Over Aberdeen
Season 1 Episode 2 of 3
The story picks up with the oil platform still ablaze, engulfed in an intense, unrelenting fire fed by oil and gas, then the entire accommodation block collapses into the sea. Many of the 61 men who eventually survive are now in the water, trying to get the attention of fast rescue boats braving the dangerous conditions. Back on the mainland, questions about the cause of disaster are asked after the initial shock of the first few days. Through news archive and deeply personal testimonies, this edition charts the trauma that remains for both the bereaved and the survivors, and the growing calls for accountability and justice as workers across the North Sea began speaking out
Disaster at Sea: The Piper Alpha Story airs on BBC Two HD at 9:00 PM, Monday 1 September. (Subtitles, new, audio description.)
