This ground was used on the two previous occasions that Mexico served as tournament hosts in 1970 and 1986, playing host to 19 matches overall and six to feature El Tricolor in action, and is scheduled to stage five games this time around. The co-hosts were undefeated in all matches here at those two tournaments, with arguably the most memorable of those encounters seeing them defeat Bulgaria 2-0 in the last-16 in 1986, in front of a crowd of 114,560 people. There has only been one previous meeting between these nations, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Czechs in a friendly tournament staged in Hong Kong in February 2000, and so with little experience of facing each other the co-hosts will look to take advantage of playing on home soil in a stadium that has been historically kind to them
