Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan returns to Minnesota in the summer to catch up with the black bears, but is upset to discover that cub Hope has been abandoned by her mother. With the young animal facing starvation, he is forced to step in and become a surrogate parent, and balances his new duties with continued study of the rest of the family
