In late-1880s rural Burgundy, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is courted by literary entrepreneur Henri Gauthier-Villars, who brings her back to Paris as his wife. Becoming painfully aware that the newlyweds' expenditure exceeds their income, she is persuaded to write up her semi-autobiographical tales which, published under his name, become a sensation.
