This is the first-ever competitive match between these nations, with all three previous encounters in 1978, 1994 and 2009 being friendly matches. The Eagles of Carthage will attempt to progress beyond the group stage for the first time in their history, having failed to do so at all six of their previous World Cup appearances, while Oranje will hope to continue their streak of always progressing to the knockout phase whenever a group stage has been part of the format.
