All four the women's quarter-finals 12 months ago were settled in straight sets, with notable wins for 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu, who beat Maria Sakkari 6-4 7-5, while the woman she beat in that memorable final, Leylah Fernandez, triumphed 6-4 7-6 over Taylor Townsend. Four of the eight men's quarter-finalists last year were American, but only one of them progressed to the semi-finals, with Ben Shelton winning 7-6 6-4 against his compatriot Frances Tiafoe
