Ninety-three-year-old Ernest is brought in with life-threatening injuries after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver just outside the hospital. He goes into cardiac arrest, and a consultant must keep his heart going manually in a bid to save his life. Meanwhile, an 83-year-old's finger is mangled by a machine at his metal-working business, and a 51-year-old man with learning difficulties is treated after collapsing, prompting his elderly mother to wonder how he will eventually cope after her death
