The first dinner party in Bristol is hosted by theatre-lover Richard Hope-Hawkins, whose eclectic menu divides the guests even before they arrive. Teacher Laura Ford is impressed by the sound of home-made pate, and food writer Darryl Bullock is intrigued by the Rod Steiger gunge cake. However, vegetarian Zoe Kellaway is not looking forward to her alternative starter of red and green pepper mousse, while stonemason Andy Wright thinks the dishes have a feminine touch
