The first failed attempt to stage a women's Tour de France. Contenders raced over the same cobblestones, conquered the same mountains, and were cheered by the same throng of adoring crowds as the men, but the race was cancelled in the 1980s because it 'got in the way' of the men's event. It didn't return to the sporting calendar until 2022
