Murdoch Mysteries – for fans of old times crimes

Canadian actor Yannick Bisson stars as the inquisitive William Murdoch, an old-timey authority man whose methods of solving crimes are surprisingly timely. His forward-thinking approach regularly sees him rely on futuristic tools, such as rudimentary finger-printing and blood sampling. Each helps him find the person – or people – behind the crimes he’s investigating.
Assisted by his trusted friends – some skeptical, some green-behind-the-ears, but all loyal – Murdoch’s mysteries take him through real-life moments. Historical figures come to life in various episodes, making it perfect for history and mystery buffs alike. From pioneering engineer Nikola Tesla and car manufacturing icon Henry Ford, to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and lightbulb creator Thomas Edison, history’s finest eventually cross paths with Murdoch.
The show also features a healthy array of guest stars to keep you pointing at your screen. Throughout Murdoch Mysteries’ 18 series (and a 19th is in the works), our Canuck cop meets author Margaret Atwood, astronaut Chris Hadfield and Star Trek‘s William Shatner playing writer Mark Twain.
Miss Scarlet and the Duke – empowering case cracking

From the get-go, the odds are against her in this male-focused arena. However, with her Scotland Yard Inspector friend William Wellington AKA The Duke (Stuart Martin), she carves out a name for herself as her list of completed cases grows.
Mixing period romance, societal issues and sexual politics issues that remain sadly quite timely, this is one of those U&alibi crime dramas that offers more than your average body-filled episodic mystery. It also features a strong heroine at its core. Series creator Rachel New has even admitted to basing Scarlet on Pride and Prejudice heroine Elizabeth Bennet.
Recently, the show changed when Martin’s character left the series. This means 2025’s series is called simply Miss Scarlet. However, the same level of period puzzle solving remains. With five series available, each containing six hour-long episodes, there’s plenty to keep you busy for some time.
I, Jack Wright – a tense family affair

I, Jack Wright keeps you guessing just as much as Chris’ previous show. At its core is a wealthy yet highly dysfunctional family grieving the seemingly suspicious death of their wealthy patriarch – the titular Jack. When they learn that his last will and testament has mysteriously removed his sons and third wife from any inheritance, eyebrows raise, fingers quickly point and a crime is suspected.
Was Jack in sound mind when he wrote the will? Was it murder? Is someone trying to steal the inheritance a bereaved family feel they are rightfully due? Each of these questions is asked and more are raised when new shocks come to light as this drama unfolds.
In addition to featuring a compelling (and compact) storyline, I, Jack Wright also boasts a stellar cast. Grace star John Simm leads the way as Gray. He’s the son of the late Jack, played by Waking The Dead’s Trevor Eve. Elsewhere, the series also features Spooks star Nikki Amuka-Bird and Shardlake actress Ruby Ashbourne Serkis. All in all, it’s one of the best U&alibi crime dramas out there.
The Marlow Murder Club – for lovers of quaint crime dramas

It’s based on Robert Thorogood’s eponymous 2021 novel about a trio of women unpicking a series of murders in Buckinghamshire. It’s led by Judith, an inquisitive and tireless former archaeologist played by Downton Abbey star Samantha Bond. Joining her are dog walker Suzie, played by Holby City’s Jo Martin, and Vicar’s wife Becks, played by Cara Horgan.
Much like many other small-time, crime filled murder mysteries, there are plenty of potential suspects and an official police investigation for this amateur team to rub up against. It packs its episodes with a healthy dose of feel-good vibes to counterbalance the chin stroking. Considering how much murder is on this list already, surely that’s a good thing.
Admittedly, it’s hard to watch this one and not think of Richard Osman’s similarly styled story The Thursday Murder Club. That said, these links hardly seem to have impacted its future. A third series featuring new a new crime is currently in the works. So this makes it another of the U&Alibi crime dramas on this list worth investing in. Time to stock up on those tea bags.
