Hogwash
What about the domino effect. Jobs given up to care, subsequent loss in tax revenue, resulting in claims for housing, caring etc benefits plus provision of mobility vehicles in many cases. Not to mention the drain on resources, increased waiting lists, demands on the ambulance service. All the consequences of self affliction on the whole and who is paying for it ? People who pay their dues and maintain their health whenever possible, that's who!

To Eric @ Benefits Cap Wed 5th Apr
I don't know what you're bothered about. 80% - 90% of the price of cigarettes is 'returned' directly to the taxpayer at point of sale. Alcohol is not much different. This appears very efficient. Smokers raise about £12 billion per year in taxes and healhcare costs for smoking related treatment costs the NHS between £2 - £6 billion a year. If you're worried about what is happening to your tax money then making smoking mandatory for all taxpayers would be the best method to help keep your coffers full if it's that important to you.

One sided
Panorama has sunk to biased trivialized reporting. They like to think their programes are top drawer, but in reality they are the pits

Benefit cap
I think the benefit cap is right £40 spent on cigarettes and beer in stead of heating he has his priorities wrong benefit is for rent, bills and food. If they want cigarettes and beer go and get a job it's wrong that they can buy things like that with benefit money, it's about time they got voucher to make sure the money is being spent properly rather than paying there rent, it's a disgrace that this is allowed to happen from our tax money.

Licence fee!
So this is where my fee is going! Not on decent, entertaining, original programming ( not repeats, cheap reality shows, stupid low grade family shows the One Show with that welsh woman) but on paying the top dogs of the BBC. Shameful!

The truth but not the whole truth
Is it true the BBC pointed out to Panorama they may wish to not delve in to how much their own employees get paid? Great journalism from the BBC!!
